BOOK
There are so many books I could recommend, this really has been somewhat of an excruciating task. But thankfully space is limited, so here are a few that came to mind.
A simple yet profound book that captures the spirit of the theme of books, is A Child of Books by Oliver Jeffers and Sam Winston. It is categorised as a children's book, but along side many other children's books, I find it transcends its categorization. Apart from children, it would make a great gift for any creative or book-lover.
Books are filled with words, language, so moving into darker waters we find Victor Klemperer's book The Language of the Third Reich. It is a sobering examination of the effects that changes in language can have on thought and perception at large; interesting and somewhat disturbing, but important nonetheless. If you like languages or WWII history, you will especially like this book - knowledge of German is an advantage (not sure if it is a prerequisite?). Another excellent book on a similar topic but not dark at all is Guy Deutscher's Through the Language Glass in which he examines the old dilemma whether language influences thought, and if so, to what degree. These two books are slightly more technical, but are written for non-academic audiences so have a look and see if their style and content take your fancy.
The classic I am recommending today is The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, a book I was fortunate enough to read as part of my gymnasium curriculum. Exploring issues rooted in religion, philosophy, morality and more, enthralling, deep and thought-provoking, it is a classic for a reason.
What are your favourite books? What could you recommend, and why? I am curious, so do send me your comments and recommendations! There is never a shortage of books one could read.
